Down syndrome is associated with increased risks of health problems like heart defects, poor immune system, hearing loss, vision & thyroid disorders. Many of these are treatable given knowledgable and well-resourced care. However, due to lack of information and wrong perception, most people with down syndrome (in Bunyoro) do not get the medical care required thus more need for awareness

We promote sharing of experiences through quarterly members' meetings, parents and careers testimonies. For instance, some parents who felt discriminated against and had lost hope or those who were locking up their children have found new courage and feel more confident to move around with their children who have down syndrome. Some are now ambassadors and are helping in identification of other children with down syndrome.

For many parents, it has been a challenge to access such services. Our therapy and outreach sessions for health centres at sub-county level have brought services nearer to the parents and helped others who would not afford to go the referral hospitals
