At Rowans Down Syndrome Awareness Center – Hoima, our mission is simple but powerful: Support for People With Down Syndrome.
In line with this commitment, we are thrilled to share the heartwarming story of how 15 amazing children from Masindi District have taken a major step toward financial freedom — all thanks to a very special initiative!

Through a partnership with Abilis Foundation, an international NGO based in Finland, we successfully distributed 30 goats (2 goats per child) to children with Down syndrome from the two sub-counties Nyangahya and Kimengo  in Masindi District. This life-changing project, which officially runs until November 2025, is not just about livestock — it’s about building sustainable livelihoods, promoting economic empowerment, and creating true inclusion in our communities.

A New Chapter of Hope and Independence

Owning goats means much more than having animals; it means having access to a sustainable source of income, manure for farming, and long-term economic opportunities. It means that families who were once vulnerable can now dream bigger for their children’s futures.

“We are so happy and grateful,” shared Mrs. Kaija Robina, a grandparent and caretaker of our member, Fortunate Wembabazi. “These goats will help Fortunate’s future be brighter and more secure. It gives us hope that we are not alone.”

Community Leaders Speak Out

The significance of the project was highlighted by several local leaders during the handover ceremony.

Mr. Businge Vincent, the District Community Development Officer (DCDO) for Masindi District, remarked,
“This initiative shows the true spirit of inclusion. Supporting families of children with Down syndrome strengthens our whole community.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Bigirwenkya Gilbert, head of the Hoima Union of Persons with Disabilities (HUDIP) and our key coordinator with Abilis Foundation, emphasized:
“Together, we are building a future where no child is left behind. These goats are a first step toward dignity, respect, and economic empowerment for children with disabilities.”
